What's my name?
A children's book
by Rushina Mody Ansari

My story
I live in the city of Malmö, in the south of Sweden. A city that hosts nearly ninety percent of nationalities from all over the world. Diversity is therefore a major subject that needs to be addressed for children who find themselves growing up with a variety of cultures and languages.
I grew up in India where the concept of diversity is just as common. It leads me to dwell upon a child's identity amongst such diverse environments.
My layered illustration style personifies the concept and leaves room for the children to allow their own interpretations.

Pedagogy
Reading to the children has been stimulating both for me and the teachers/ librarians. I read in English & also in Swedish depending on the audience. I have a few activities planned around the subject of the book but it is always reassuring to see how far and wide the imaginations of children take us through the book. Along the way we have discovered many aspects of "identity". You can read about the various pedagogic stimulations that often lead from the reading of this book.

"A genuine conversation between a parent & child that tackles the complexity of identity in a very simple way. Our girls loved it & so did we."

Characters
All characters in the book are real and based on true life events. It is a story and an ongoing musing of my daughter's growing up in a multi cultural and multi lingual environment. My daughter's name has been maintained with her permission. However the names of her friends have been changed to maintain privacy.
